Sprinters will be a major attraction due to sheer numbers in the short dash on the opening day of the three-day fourth edition of Indian Open U23 Athletics Competition that will commence here on Saturday at Patna's Patliputra Sports Complex.
The men’s 100m has attracted 89 entries. There will be nine heats. The first eight heats will have 10 competitors while the last heat will have nine sprinters. “We have ten lanes for the 100m event. Hence it was decided to have 10 athletes in each of the heats,” Stanley Jones, head of technical team of Athletics Federation of India said on the eve of the U23 competition.
Manikanta H Hoblidhar who holds the national 100m record of 10.23 seconds set last year will look ahead to maintain his supremacy. He will face stiff challenge from Odisha’s Animesh Kujur who is one of the leading men's 200m sprinter and will be seen in action in the 100m dash.
The women’s 100 heats will see 36 sprinters battling for supremacy.
The men’s 400m has also attracted a good number of athletes. There are eight heats. Each heat will have eight athletes.
Going by the entries, 38 runners will contest the men's 1500m event, while two-day grueling decathlon has attracted 24 entries. On the first day of decathlon the athletes will compete in 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m. The second day events are—110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500m run.
The opening event on Saturday will be the men and women’s 10,000m race. Haryana’s Puneet Yadav who holds the U23 record of 29:44.64 in 10,000m set in 2022, will be among 25 competitors. The majority of the distance runners are from Uttar Pradesh.
A fair number of Uttar Pradesh runners are in the women's 10,000m race. In all there are 12 competitors that will contest for medals on the first day of the meet.
The morning session will have two finals while medals will be distributed in nine disciplines in the post lunch session.
Radhakrishnan Nair, Chief Athletics coach said, the Indian Open U23 Athletics Competition in Patna will be a good platform for promising athletes to showcase their potential. “Several athletes competing here in Patna will be aiming for a steady performance in the 2025 season to stay in the race for Asian Championship and World Athletics Championships,” the chief athletics coach added.

Uttar Pradesh’s experienced thrower Tanya Chaudary won women’s hammer throw gold with a meet record of 54.42m on the opening day of the fourth edition of Indian Open U23 Athletics Competition here at Patliputra Sports Complex on Saturday. The second meet record of the day was set in the women’s triple jump by Maharashtra’s Poorva Hitesh Sawant whose gold medal winning jump was 13.25m.
Away from the field events, Odisha’s sprinter Animesh Kujur clocked 10.38 seconds in men's 100m semifinal round to better the meet record of 10.39 seconds in the name of Pranav Gurav recorded in 2022.
Tanya, 21, opening throw of 54.42m fetched her gold medal with a meet record. The Uttar Pradesh thrower was steady in her performance today and had a series of 54.42m, 54.36m, no mark, 54.41m, 53.92 and no mark.
Tanya has a personal best of 63.16m recorded in 2023 while her season best this year was 61.57m recorded in June in Panchkula. She finished seventh at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
The second meet record was recorded at the triple jump arena. Maharashtra promising jumper Poorva Hitesh Sawant best jump of the day was 13.25m, which was better than the previous record of 13.16m set in 2023 by Avinash Parule.
Poorva got her rhythm right in her last attempt, which was a meet record. She had a series of 12.89m, 12.24m, 12.40m, 12.59m, 12.60m and 13.25m.
Earlier during the morning session, Haryana’s Puneet Yadav won the gold in the men’s 10,000m race. His winning time was 30:10.96 seconds. The women’s 10,000m gold went to Anchal Jaiswal of Uttar Pradesh. She clocked 36:25.12 seconds.
Later in the evening session heavy downpour temporarily halted the events.

Delhi’s sprinter Tushar Kanti Manna and Haryana’s javelin thrower Jyoti were cynosure of all eyes as they entered their names in the record books on the penultimate day of the fourth edition of Indian Open U23 Athletics Competition here at Patliputra Sports Complex on Sunday.
While the Delhi sprinter broke the 46 seconds barrier to win gold in 400m, Jyoti improves her own javelin throw record.
Manna shifted gear in the homestretch to post a winning time of 45.92 seconds in the men’s 400m, which was better than the meet record of 46.58 seconds set in 2021 by Ayush Dabas.
At the javelin throwing arena the defending champion from Haryana was unstoppable. In-form Jyoti surged ahead of other competitors on her opening throw but got a big throw on her fifth attempt (58.49m), which was better than her own previous record of 52.77m set in 2023.
She had a series of 54.92m, 55.83m, 57.41m, 54.27m, 58.49m and 55.40m.
Jyoti’s teammate Deepika also bettered the previous meet record. Her silver-medal winning throw was 54.71m.
On his way to winning gold Haryana’s Abhimanyu equaled men’s discus throw meet record of 53.66m set last year by Dinesh Kumar in Chandigarh.
Two women high jumpers— Gobika K of Tamil Nadu and Payal of Gujarat equaled the meet record of 1.76m. Gobika won the gold, while Payal settled for silver.
Ankita, who competed in women’s 5,000m at the Paris Olympic Games made her debut at the 3,000m steeplechase event. She won gold with a time of 10:17.25 seconds.
Odisha's Animesh Kujur and Sudeshna Hanmant Shivankar of Maharashtra emerged fastest male and female athletes of the meet. Kujur clocked 10.40 seconds, while Sudeshna winning time was 11.76 seconds

Odisha’s Animesh Kujur and Devyaniba Zala of Gujarat walked away with best male and female athlete awards on the final day of the fourth edition of Indian Open U23 Athletics Competition here at Patliputra Sports Complex on Monday. Several meet records were also erased on the final day.
Kujur was one of the athletes, who entered his name in record books on Monday. Winner of 100m gold added 200m gold to his kitty today with a time of 20.65 seconds, which was better than his own meet record of 20.87 seconds set in 2023.
Gujarat’s Devyaniba Zala performance over 400m (53.53 seconds) got her best female athlete award of the meet.
