Thiruvannamalai, April 29: Rajasthan Long Jumper Sushmita’s joy knew no bounds when she kept her date with the 6m mark three times on her way to victory on the second evening of the 21st National Federation Cup Junior U20 Athletics Championships in the District Sports Complex here today. She met the qualifying standard for the Asian U20 Championships in June.
On a day when the women’s Long Jump event did not have India’s best, Shaili Singh, among the starters, Sushmita attacked the takeoff board with gusto and improved her personal best from 5.97m, with her opening leap of 6.01m. She backed that up with a 6.03m effort on her third try and found 6.21m on her fifth attempt.
Bharatpreet Singh (Punjab) came up with the best Discus Throw by an Indian U20 in nearly nine years when he marked turf at 56.18m on his fourth visit to the circle. Sachin Dalal’s 58.11m has remained the men’s U20 National Record since May 10, 2014. Bharatpreet’s effort saw him secure the Asian U20 Championships qualifying standard.
Assam’s Mehedi Hassan surge from the outside over the last 100m in the men’s 1500m saw him finish in 3;49.73, two hundredth of a second inside the qualifying mark. After leading for a lap, he found himself running behind Delhi duo of Ritik Deol and Shailabh. Sunil Rajbhar (Uttar Pradesh) and Vikash (Haryana) moved ahead before the bell but Mehedi Hassan came with a fine kick.
Late on Friday, Uttar Pradesh’s Vidhi qualified for the Asian Championships in the women’s Shot Put, hurling the iron ball to 14.77m effort on her fifth try, just 1 cm beyond the qualifying mark. She had two other puts over 14m, improving on her previous best of 13.11m
