Thiruvannamalai, April 30: Madhya Pradesh’s Bushra Khan Gauri and Uttar Pradesh’s Sharuk Khan captured the spotlight on the final day of the 21st Federation Cup Junior U20 Athletics Championships at the District Sports Complex here today.
Bashra Khan Gauri rewrote the women’s 3000m meet record with a personal best effort of 9:35.21 and Sharuk Khan made his maiden 3000m Steeplechase race a memorable one with a meet record of 9:05.42.. They were among the athletes who earned themselves tickets to the Asian U20 Championships in South Korea in June
It was third time lucky for the 17-year-old from Pachama town, 35km west of Bhopal. Having first surfaced in the 2016 National Inter-District Junior Athletics Meet in Visakhapatnam, Bushra had finished outside the podium in the last two editions. Today, she came up with her first sub-10-minute effort to emerge winner, improving on her previous best of 10:04.29 earlier this year.
Uttar Pradesh 16-year-old Sharuk Khan’s decision to try his hand in the men’s 3000m Steeplechase, moving up from the 1500m and 2000m, earned him reward in the form a berth in the Asian U20Championships with a new meet record of 9:05.42.
The men’s 800m and Javelin Throw competitions saw a clutch of athletes meet the Asian U20 qualifying standard. Shakeel (Rajasthan) won the half-mile race in which all seven finishers came home inside the qualifying mark of 1:54.55. With a 73.82m effort, Shivam Lohakare (Maharashtra) led five Javelin Throwers who breached the qualifying standard of 65.36m.
Karnataka sprinters Nayana Kokare and Unnathi Aiyappa Bolland logged personal best times in the women’s 200m, clocking 24.28 seconds and 24.47 seconds respectively. Nayana, a 2019 NIDJAM competitor who has been training in Doha, had a previous best of 24.64 seconds. Unnati’s previous best was 24.84. They join West Bengal’s Rezoana Mallick Heena, who clocked 24.23 seconds in Udupi, as the qualifiers.
